Frequently Asked Questions - if the
answer to your question is not here
please do not hesitate to contact us.
Do I need to leave an expansion gap?
Yes. A 10mm gap around the perimeter of the room must be left to
allow the boards to expand and contract. Floors should also be broken in
the doorways to allow for expansion and contraction at this point.
Do I need to glue all the joints?
Boards that are fitted using a Woodloc or Uniclic system do not have
to be glued. Boards that use with tongue and groove fitting should be
glued on all four sides using the correct wood glue, that has a low
moisture content and is very strong. Stitch glue the long edges of the
boards applying the glue to the top edge of the groove in a stitch
method. i.e. place a bead of glue approx 100mm long leave a space of
100-150mm then place another bead 100mm long.
How do I get round the architrave and door frame?
Place an off cut of the flooring flat on the sub floor with a piece
of underlay placed under the board. Lay a handsaw flat on top of the
board and cut into the architrave and doorframe. This will give you a
cut at the correct height for the thickness of the floor. Chisel out the
doorframe and architrave to suit. This will provide a neat finish and
maintain the expansion gap. Also use this method to the bottom tread of
staircases.
Is wood suitable in toilets, kitchens and bathrooms?
Most wood species are suitable to be put in areas that may be
subject to excess moisture as the lacquer finish will protect the boards
but any excessive moisture must be mopped up. It is not advisable to
leave wet bath mats and towels etc sat on the floor.
We advise against putting Beech in these areas as this species of wood
is very sensitive to moisture.
Can I fix a toilet pan directly to the floating floor?
It is not advisable to fix any object through a floating floor as if
this is done pinching of the floor at the given point may occur. This
may result in the flooring moving in one area and may cause opening up
in others.
If the toilet pan is to be fixed through the floor it is advisable to
fully bond the floor to the sub floor, this should then be fine.
Alternatively the floor can be scribed around the toilet pan very
carefully following the contours of the pan with a compass and pencil.
Under cut the boards at 45 deg and seal around the top of the board and
the WC pan with a good quality silicone.
Can I fix an engineered board directly to a concrete sub floor?
Engineered boards should ideally be laid floating on an underlay and DPM
leaving an expansion gap of 10mm around the perimeter of the room.
How do I fit the boards to an irregular shaped wall?
Set out the first row of boards against the wall. Set a compass and
pencil to the widest gap and scribe along the boards with the pencil
using the wall edge as a guide. Cut the boards off to this line. They
should then fit the irregular shape perfectly.
Will there be sound transmission through
the floor?
You may get some sound transmission depending on the construction of
the first floor. A joist and timber floor will transmit more sound than
a concrete floor. Therefore we would recommend a sound deadening
underlay such as Cush-n-Wood or Tuplex is used for joist & timber
floors.
What tools will I need?
The main tools to install a floating floor would be:
An electric jigsaw with down cutting blades so as not to chip the top
ware layer of the flooring.
Pencil, Square, Knocking block to tap the boards together
Jemmy bar to pull up the header joints, Stanley knife and a set of
wedges to hold the first three rows in place when you first start off.
How long does a floor take to fit?
Approximately 25sqm per day can be fitted on average but there are
many variables.
What is the difference between solid, engineered, wood vaneers and
laminate floors?
A solid wood floor is made from one piece of solid wood, this is a
living product as is liable to move by expanding and contracting. An
engineered board is a manufactured board made from two or three layers
cross bonded at 90 degrees to each other, so are guaranteed to be stable
with no movement likely to happen between the joints etc. A wood veneer
is a thinner board usually about 7mm and again three layers cross-bonded
to each other, but the veneer is only 0.4mm thick. So although real wood
and natural looking, it cannot be sanded at all only re sealed. Laminate
flooring. This is not wood at all, it is a plastic, a photograph of food
laminated onto a MDF board, this is generally a cold product, boards do
repeat, is difficult to repair, and is sensitive to moisture, laminate
has a lot shorter life span than wood.
How soon can the floor be delivered?
Delivery depends on the availability of the wood but generally delivery
takes 4-5 working days.
Is there a delivery charge?
If the net cost of the order is less than £300 a charge of approximately
£20 is incurred.
What help is available if I have problems?

link on the main menu to email us. We are

Are the products guaranteed?
Kahrs 15mm boards come with a 30 year written guarantee, Kahrs Linnea
comes with a 12 year guarantee.
What else will I need other than the wood I'm fitting?
Underlay, Trims, Screed, Tools.
